If you are one of those ladies who really enjoy the deliciousness of authentic sushi, I have good news: eating sushi has great health benefits for women. As it turns out nori seaweed has been found to really alter the metabolism of estrogen by altering women’s gut flora, resulting in decreased breast cancer risk. I don’t know about you, but to me - a true sushi lover, and a woman - this is great news. Eating what you love and get great health benefits, too, is like the perfect combination of a balanced diet.
This is not a new study though. It is known for over a decade now that in vitro (in a Petri dish) seaweed broth is efficient at clearing cancer cells. Three types of human breast cancer cells were exposed to either a widely used chemotherapy drug or sea vegetable. The seaweed worked better. And unlike the chemo, it didn’t hurt normal, non-cancerous breast cells.
Additionally, there was a study done outside of a laboratory and this time it involved people. In this population study they compared women with breast cancer to women without, and it was found that eating a single nori sheet a day may cut a woman’s breast cancer in half. One of the reasons it is thought to prevent breast cancer is because seaweed favorably alters estrogen metabolism that in turn effectively balances women’s intestinal bacteria. So, basically, as women, the more seaweed we eat, the less estrogen we have in our system, which may lower the breast cancer risk.
The breast cancer protection may also be due to the large content of fiber in sea vegetables, or because seaweed may block the enzyme that undermines our bodies’ attempt to flush out excess hormones.
Another reason could be that seaweed may in some way interfere with estrogen binding to estrogen receptors.
So, whatever the cause, to effectively lower their estrogen levels, Asian women may be able to get away with about one sheet of nori a day, but Western women are physically so much larger that it may take closer to two.
The great news is that there are several delicious seaweed salads and snacks out there to make it a tasty experience-just try to get some low-fat, low-salt ones.
One of the simple, great ways of enjoying nori is to simply munch on it as a snack or use it as a wrap for quick, simple summer lunches. Take a sheet of nori and add some avocado, or a layer of grated carrots, shredded lettuce, sprouts or any other veggie that you like - roll it up and enjoy.
Another wonderful way to enjoy nori is to order your favorite sushi and have a delicious sushi meal for lunch or dinner. Enjoy your favorite sushi and the health benefits it comes with.
